Tennessee Governor Candidate Responses: Full Responses to Question 2

The second question in this project moves from first priorities into governing contrast, which is often where campaign language becomes more revealing.

It is one thing for candidates to identify Tennessee’s biggest unresolved problem. It is another thing to explain what they would actually do differently if they inherited the same office, the same state systems, and many of the same political realities already facing Gov. Bill Lee.

That distinction matters because gubernatorial campaigns often speak broadly about change while remaining less specific about where that change would first appear inside actual state government.

Would a new governor alter spending priorities?

Would they reorganize how agencies operate?

Would they challenge decisions already made under the current administration, or largely continue them under different language?

This question was designed to press beyond campaign identity and ask each candidate to define practical difference, not rhetorical distance.

As with the first release, each campaign received the same written question, under the same response conditions, with the same opportunity to answer directly.

Some candidates answered cautiously, creating contrast without direct confrontation.

Others described more structural changes in how Tennessee government should hear public input, allocate resources, or define state responsibility.

What follows are the full responses exactly as submitted under Question Two, presented side by side so readers can examine where candidates believe Tennessee should continue its current direction — and where they believe it should depart from it.

Question 2:

Tennessee remains one of the most politically stable Republican states in the country.

In practical governing terms, what would you do differently from Gov. Bill Lee rather than simply continue his approach?
