By the seventh and final question, the format intentionally changed.
The first six questions in this series placed every campaign under identical conditions: same question, same deadline, same written format, same opportunity to answer.
That allowed readers to compare candidates directly across shared policy issues such as affordability, public safety, education, healthcare, and the difficult decisions Tennessee may soon face.
But by the final round, a different kind of comparison became more useful.
No serious gubernatorial campaign enters a race as a blank slate. Each candidate already carries a particular governing lane, public identity, political challenge, or policy emphasis that deserves more direct follow-up than a universal question can provide.
So instead of asking every campaign the same final question, each candidate received one question tied directly to the governing space they themselves had already established through earlier answers, public positioning, or campaign identity.
For one candidate, that meant testing whether an independent path in Tennessee is practical or symbolic.
For another, it meant asking where business-style management would first collide with state government.
For another, where ideological conservatism believes current Republican leadership has become too cautious.
For another, how federal political history should translate into state-level independence.
And for another, whether Tennessee voters may now be open to hearing a statewide Democratic message differently than in prior cycles.
The goal was not to create unequal treatment, but more precise scrutiny.
Because by the final question, the most useful comparison is often not whether candidates answer identically — but whether they can answer directly when the question is uniquely theirs.
