Four Weekends of James White Parkway Closures Begin Aug. 7. Here Are the Detours.

James White Parkway is scheduled to close in one direction at a time over four consecutive August weekends for bridge repair work, temporarily removing one of Knoxville’s major connections between Interstate 40, downtown and South Knoxville.
The closures begin Aug. 7 and continue each weekend through Aug. 31.
According to the schedule, the southbound side of James White Parkway will close during the first two weekends. The northbound side will close during the final two weekends.
The timing makes the project more than a routine construction notice.
The first closure begins during Knox County Schools’ back-to-school period. Sixth- and ninth-grade orientation is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 7, and the first half-day for all students is Monday, Aug. 10. The second southbound closure overlaps with the University of Tennessee’s fall move-in period, including first-year move-in from Aug. 12 through Aug. 14.
That means the closures may affect not only weekend drivers, but also families returning to school routines, teachers, university students, parents arriving from out of town and South Knoxville residents using the parkway as a primary connection to downtown and the interstate.

Aug. 28–31
Drivers should confirm the exact start and reopening times before traveling. Construction schedules can change because of weather, equipment issues or other project conditions. TDOT’s SmartWay system and 511 traffic information should have the most current updates.
What southbound drivers should expect
The southbound side of James White Parkway carries traffic from the Interstate 40 and Hall of Fame Drive area toward downtown exits, Sevier Avenue, Anita Drive, Moody Avenue, South Knoxville and Chapman Highway connections.
During the southbound closures, drivers trying to reach South Knoxville from east or north of downtown will need to use another route.
That could put additional pressure on Hall of Fame Drive, downtown streets, Chapman Highway, Henley Street, Alcoa Highway and routes connecting South Knoxville with the rest of the city.
Drivers should follow the posted detour rather than relying only on habit or saved navigation routes. Navigation apps may redirect some motorists through smaller streets, but residential cut-throughs can create new problems for neighborhoods, pedestrians, cyclists and local traffic.
What northbound drivers should expect
The northbound side of James White Parkway carries traffic from South Knoxville toward downtown, Hall of Fame Drive, Interstate 40 and connections toward Interstate 275 and Broadway.
During the northbound closures, South Knoxville residents and visitors should expect longer travel times leaving the area. That could affect weekend trips, downtown workers, restaurant traffic, Urban Wilderness visitors and drivers heading toward the interstate system.
Chapman Highway, Sevier Avenue, downtown streets and Alcoa Highway may see more traffic as drivers find alternate routes.
Again, the official detour matters. Not every road that appears open on a map is designed to absorb parkway-level traffic.
Why full closures may be needed
TDOT describes the project as bridge repair work.
Bridge repairs can require more space and more predictable work windows than ordinary road maintenance. Crews may need access across multiple lanes, room for heavy equipment, protection from live traffic and time for materials such as concrete to cure.
A full directional closure can be disruptive, but it may allow work to be completed in concentrated weekend windows rather than through months of intermittent lane restrictions.
Drivers should still expect delays around the closure area, especially near ramps, downtown approaches and South Knoxville connections.
Why the timing matters
The first closure weekend begins as Knox County schools reopen.
If the parkway reopens before Monday morning traffic, the effect on the first student half-day may be limited. If the closure extends into the school commute, families and school employees may need to allow extra time, especially in and around South Knoxville.
The second weekend presents a different challenge.
University of Tennessee move-in brings thousands of students and families into Knoxville, many of whom are unfamiliar with the city’s traffic patterns. James White Parkway is not the main route to most residence halls, but closing a major downtown connector can shift traffic onto nearby streets at the same time move-in traffic is already building.
That combination is the issue.
Not one closure.

What drivers should do
Drivers should check TDOT SmartWay before leaving, allow additional travel time and watch for posted detours and changing ramp access.
South Knoxville residents may want to plan errands, school travel and downtown trips around the closure windows. UT families should check move-in routes before arriving and avoid assuming that a navigation app will choose the least congested path.
The work is scheduled for four weekends.
The inconvenience may be temporary.
But for drivers moving between Interstate 40, downtown Knoxville and South Knoxville, August will require a little more planning than usual.
